Many Christmas customs - from decorated greenery to gift-giving - trace to older midwinter and New Year festivals in Mesopotamia, Persia/Babylonia, northern Europe and Rome. Christianity adapted some popular rites, and by the fourth century December 25 was widely observed in Rome.
